1/3 Of U.S. High School Students Have An iPhone (Yikes!)

One-Third Of High School Students In The U.S. Have An iPhone

The amount of high school students with an iPhone is on the rise.

The sale of Apple’s iPhone has been off the charts, after the company sold a record amount of handsets last holiday quarter. Today we have some more insight on where a large chunk of those sales are going. According to a new report, one-third of high school students in the U.S. are owners of Apple’s iPhone. Even a larger amount indicated they hope to pick up the iPhone during the next six months.

Analyst Gene Munster, representing firm Piper Jaffray, has published the firm’s semi-annual survey of teenagers in the U.S. The study found that the majority of iPhone sales to teenagers are the cheaper $49 iPhone 3GS model.

In our most recent survey the percentage of teens that own an iPhone came in at 34%, up from 23% in the Fall and 17% last Spring. We believe the meaningful uptick in iPhone ownership among teens may be driven by the cheaper $49 iPhone 3GS (in some cases free). Interest in purchasing an iPhone in the next 6 months rose to 40% (another all-time high vs. our previous surveys). Purchase intent was at 38% in our last survey in the Fall.

Most likely due to holiday sales, the number of teens with an iPhone has risen to 34%, up from 23% last fall. Parents most likely looked at Apple’s iPhone 3GS model as a good, low-cost and sometimes free option, for their teenagers.

The amount of teenagers that want an iPhone is also on the rise. The study found that 40% of the teenagers studied were looking to buy an iPhone during the next six-months.

At my high school, the number of teenagers with an iPhone seems to be more like two-thirds of the school’s population. Everywhere you look people seem to be on their iPhone, and those who don’t have an iPhone, want one. An also interesting fact is that most of them are currently hooked on the popular game Draw Something.

As for the other 2/3 of teenagers studied, they’re most likely using Android and feature handsets. But it sounds like the majority of them want an iPhone, as indicated by the study.

Teenagers, what’s the ratio of iPhone users at your high school? And parents, which iPhone model have you purchased for your children?

Not For Parents: The Travel Book (North American Edition)

Not_for_parents_the_travel_book_north_american_edition__lonely_planet_shop

Cool stuff to know about every country in the world. Everyone knows which is the world’s highest mountain, but do you know which country banned chewing gum? Or what’s the world’s stinkiest fruit? Or who invented roller skates? Or which building leans more than the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Or where can you eat fried spiders as a snack?

Here at Lonely Planet we decided to make a book about the world’s countries for children, not parents.

The world is a very big place, and in The Not-for-Parents Travel Book we’ve concentrated on the really
interesting bits to create a snapshot of what each country is like. (Warning to parents: these might not be the same “really interesting bits” that you like…where to buy coffee, how many stars the hotel has, what’s the phone number for the airport, blah, blah, blah.)

In this book are the epic events, amazing animals, hideous histories, funky foods, and crazy facts that make the world’s 200 countries so fascinating. Each country has a page to itself—so tiny Tuvalu gets as much space as superpower USA.

Citing Safety Concerns, Somali Pirates Refuse to Board Cruise Ships ;-)

MOGADISHU (The Borowitz Report) – In yet another public relations setback for the beleaguered cruise industry, Somali pirates today said they would no longer board cruise ships, citing “unsafe working conditions.”

“If the cruise ship industry thinks that it’s going to be business as usual between them and the Somali pirates, they need to have their heads examined,” said Somali pirate spokesman Sugule.  “We Somali pirates may be bold, but we’re not crazy.”

The pirate said that the recent fire that crippled the cruise ship Azamara Quest “has sent a shiver through the pirate community.”

“We Somali pirates face enough risks without dealing with boats bursting into flames,” he said.  “And don’t get me started on capsizing.  If you want to call us rats deserting a sinking ship, so be it.”

When asked if the Somali pirates might attempt to board cruise ships in the future, he responded, “I am telling me hearties that if they were thinking of pillaging a cruise ship of its booty over Easter Break, they should make alternative plans.”

Carol Foyler, a spokesperson for cruise industry, said that the cruise ship companies “would be working overtime to win back the pirates’ trust.”

In the meantime, Ms. Foyler said, the industry would be unveiling a new slogan in the weeks to come: “Come for the fun, stay for the raging inferno.”  Get a free subscription to the Borowitz Report here.

Magazines Introduce a Netflix for Tablet Editions (interesting approach to publishing, marketing)

The country's biggest print publishers are introducing a Netflix-style service for magazine tablet editions, offering unlimited titles and issues for a flat monthly fee.

The Next Issue Media newsstand

The Next Issue Media newsstand

-->

The service, from Next Issue Media -- a joint venture of Conde Nast, Time Inc., Hearst, Meredith and News Corp.--prices unlimited monthly and biweekly titles at $9.99 per month. A premium version that also includes weeklies costs $14.99 per month. Consumers will read the titles on Next Issue Media's new app.

At its start the service is limited to certain Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Xoom, but Next Issue Media plans to seek Apple's's approval for an iPad version in coming weeks.

Subscriptions to many monthlies' tablet editions cost $1.99 per month, so consumers could get their money's worth from the basic $9.99 plan if they read five or more tablet editions a month.

But consumers who prefer print can still find very competitive pricing there. Fitness magazine is available in print right now, for example, at $5.99 for a whole year. And subscribers to Time Inc. and Conde Nast magazines already get their corresponding tablet editions at no extra cost.

Whether all that unnecessarily limits the plan's appeal or productively protects print editions will depend on your perspective. Wenner Media Chairman Jann Wenner warned last year that publishers might be unnecessarily rushing to tablet editions at the expense of their print products.

But the Netflix-style plan could also expand magazine consumption.

Consumers seem happy enough buying print magazines on a title-by-title basis -- much the way they rented or bought DVDs individually before Netflix came along -- but digital delivery's instant gratification could make a buffet approach more appealing.

"What we know from consumers in other categories is that when they have an option to pay for something on an unlimited basis, they consume more in that category as a result," said Steve Sachs, exec VP-consumer marketing and sales at Time Inc.

Next Issue Media's new app also allows consumers to read each participating magazine's tablet edition in one place, hopefully eliminating some of the friction that comes with downloading a different app for each magazine and figuring out a new navigation scheme for many.

The monthlies and bimonthlies currently covered by the basic $9.99 plan are All You, Allure, Better Homes and Gardens, Car and Driver, Coastal Living, Conde Nast Traveler, Cooking Light, Elle, Esquire, Essence, Fitness, Fortune, Glamour, Golf, Health, InStyle, Money, Parents, People en Espanol, People StyleWatch, Popular Mechanics, Real Simple, Southern Living, Sports Illustrated Kids, Sunset, This Old House and Vanity Fair. The weeklies in the premium plan are Entertainment Weekly, People, Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker and Time.

Next Issue Media's app also sells titles on a single-copy basis.

I just got an email from onOne Software that this week they’re making Perfect Layers a free app. Amazing!

Media_httpononesoftca_kabee

And I trust since it’s April 3, it’s not an April Fool’s joke. :-) The app works with images from Lightroom Aperture, or any application into a single layered file.

I got the email from them because I’d bought Perfect Layers when it came out. (It’s now version 2.) The offer to owners of Perfect Layers was a different app from them for free or their complete Perfect Photo Suite for just $100 (rather than $300). I’ve rarely heard of offers like this.
